Morning Routines

It’s been a while since I last looked at my Morning Routines. Things are getting a bit slack around here at the moment what with the impending assignment deadlines and the like. Add to this the growing of Miss Moo to the point we’re starting three meals a day, along with changing nap times (is 9 months too young to go to one nap a day? I thought so) and routines and I’m forced to rethink my morning routine.

Step 1. Actually follow one. I’m pretty slack at this to be honest. A cup of tea and breakfast call me to the computer first thing, and often there I’ll stay until I look at the time and realise I have 5 minutes to get out the door, or that at 10am the kids really should be dressed. Of course there is something I could do to make the mornings run smoother.

Step -1. Follow an evening routine. I am pretty useless at night time, I need to focus on simple things like putting together a few snacks, making sure the washing is done or at least organised, and probably even getting out clothes for me and the kids.

River commented on my post the other week about taking the meat out of the freezer before bed the night before, rather than pulling it out at 5:30pm and hope to be eating by 6pm. The evening routine is probably the most important to get the day off to a good start. When I get off my lazy butt and do it, it works well and the mornings go smoother.

To be fair the last few nights I have been doing an evening routine and things seem to be going better. Maybe that’s more my problem, than the morning routine?

Please share your morning routine and give me some ideas!! What’s on your “must do” list in the morning?

It’s the evening routine that is the pivitol one in this house. ‘If’ I can manage to get everyone’s lunches made and snacks put aside, pack the dishwasher, throw in the first load of washing (and set the time), have clothes organised and have bags packed the night before for whatever we are doing the next day, my mornings always go off a lot smoother.

But that said. Getting the morning basics of getting the bed made, getting the washing started, unpacking the dishwasher, taking care of myself really does help me get going in the morning and have a good day.

Like Bettina said, the evening routine is essential to making mornings run smoothly. So much of your next day’s preparation can be done in the hour or so when the kids have gone to bed. Then when the morning runs smoothly the rest of the day just kind of falls in to place.

    Well…
*MY* morning routine is something like this…
    Get up about 5.40am
    Shower
    Dress
Unpack dishwasher whilst the kettle boils
    Breakfast
    Dishes in dishwasher
Notes for the day for whoever’s in charge
    Hair/face/shoes
    Lunch in bag
Say seeya to the bloke as I barrell out the door at 6.40am

I get to work just after 8am, first thing I do is call D and tell him to check the diary! This will tell him what we’re having for dinner so what meat needs to be got out; status of the washing, ummm any other stray jobs I want him to do.

BUT the evening routine is the key…
I get home from work and
    1. Washing - sort dirty, fold and put away clean
    2. Lay out clothes for everyone (boys and I - the Bloke can look after himself)
    3. Pack lunch box snacks (Make lunches on Sunday and Wednesday nights)
    4. Unpack and repack/restock bags
    5. Stack dishwasher and clean up kitchen
    6. Prep dinner
    7. Big Kid’s reader and little kid’s story
    8. Put the kids to bed
    9. Deal with school paperwork/mail
    10. Update the diary for the next day
    11. D cooks, we eat, I clean up
    12. Relax on couch by about 8.30pm. Bed by 10pm ish…

But having half the morning stuff done the night before saves *SO* much time in the morning. Meal planning - even the rough guide we do - saves us loads of time; because then D knows what to get out and what he’s cooking (or if I’m cooking, lol)

Before working full time, my evenings were about the same; but the morning was this…
    Breakfast
    Clean up kitchen
    Washing
    What’s for dinner
    Make the beds

That was it (I get dressed almost every day, lol). Keeping it small made sure it got done!
